Carolyn McWilliams grew up in Baltimore Co. Maryland with her mother, brother, father, and step-mother as well as plenty of adopted framily. After graduating from Dulaney High school in 2002, she attended East Carolina University in Greenville, North Carolina to study Psychology and Dance. She completed her bachelors Degree in 2006, then moved to Northern Virginia to work at the Northern Virginia Mental Health Institute. The personal and professional experience gained in 7+ years at "the Institute" as a Psychiatric Technician, member of the Recreation Therapy Department, Therapeutic Options of VA (behavioral emergency prevention and management) instructor, Critical Incident Stress Management (CISM) facilitator, and Organizational Culture Change committee member will be forever invaluable to her practice.
After completing her Master of Education in Community Counseling at George Mason University in 2014, she continued to serve her community as the program director for two short-term residential crisis stabilization houses in Northern Virginia.
Carolyn moved to Texas in 2016 and through her work as a case manager with True Mental Health, she became well acquainted with the landscape of mental health care in San Antonio. Carolyn became fully licensed as a professional counselor in early 2020, just in time for a global pandemic and the birth of her second child to completely change expectations for the future. Over the last 4 years, Carolyn has been working as a private practice counselor while moving through priceless personal and professional evolution. The start of 2023 brought the birth of Choice Counseling, PLLC. Carolyn's dream is for this little practice to support it's valued clients to be empowered through the choices they make, to build a greater sense of self and peace in their lives.

Oh yes, the infamous feelings wheel: https://feelingswheel.com/ you KNOW you need to reference it at least daily. . .
The National Alliance on Mental Illness https://www.nami-sat.org/ is an awesome organization that I have worked with throughout my career both here in Texas and in Northern VA. They offer amazing individual and family programming, resources, and advocacy opportunities.
I aim to be very available to my valued clients and do my best to respond to email and text messages quickly, however, I CANNOT be relied on as a 24/7 crisis contact. Here are some other excellent resources to lean on for support:
